Neighboring country Libya condemns seizure of power in Niger

PRIME Minister Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba of neighboring country Libya, under the government of National Unity, say they join their voice with the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States in their call for the return of stability and the restoration of the unity of Nigerian Democratic Institutions.

 “We condemn the attempt to destabilize Niger; the brotherly neighbor dragged into the furnace of conflict, which would tear the stability of the entire region, and had charted an exceptional path for democracy, majestically gathering the mosaic of the people around it,” Musa Al-Koni, Deputy Prime Minister of Libya said.

Members of the public have demonstrated strong protests against the seizure of President Mohamed Bazoum, arguing that Bazoum was democratically elected.

 “We salute the uprising of these people today against the coup, and their victory over the outcome of the ballot box. We affirm that we and Africa are with them,” Musa Al-Koni, Deputy Prime Minister of Libya said

France, Niger’s former colonial power also joins calls to restore democracy in the country.

This is in spite of Niger Army spokesman, Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, asking foreign powers not to interfere in the matter.

At the moment, Niger’s borders are shut and a curfew has been imposed nationwide.
