Death toll hits 147; Alert issued for potential new floods amid rising river levels

LOCAL media reports indicate that the flood in Brazil has affected over 1.4 million residents, with more than 164,000 losing their homes and 67,000 seeking shelter.

The National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) predicts further deterioration, with heavy rains and more flooding expected on Friday.

The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul has alerted the population to the possibility of new floods in the state. According to the Civil Defense, the water levels in the rivers are rising due to the recent rain that has affected the state.

The mayor of the city of Canoas, located in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, has called on all residents of seven neighborhoods in the municipality who are still in their homes or have returned home to evacuate immediately due to the risk of new floods in the area.

Meanwhile, the General Command of the Military Police of the Federal District announced to Vice Governor Celine Leão that she sent 25 police officers to combat crime in the region.

Governor Eduardo Leite of Rio Grande do Sul stated that the restoration plan would cost a minimum of R$19 billion or about $3.6 billion.

A state of emergency was declared in Rio Grande do Sul on May 2nd, with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pledging to alleviate the suffering caused by the region’s worst climate disaster.
