Ecuadorean President Lasso dissolves Congress

THE president of Ecuador has dissolved the Nation’s Congress amid his impeachment trial.

In his appearance at the trial held in the National Assembly, Guillermo Lasso denied the corruption charges that were made against him.

The president told the opposition-controlled parliament that his accusers lacked evidence and alleged that the trial was politically motivated.

Following this, Lasso dissolved the National Assembly in a decree on Wednesday.

The decision allows for a New Presidential Election within 6 months.

In a statement, Lasso said,

“This is a democratic decision, not only because it is constitutional, but because it returns the power to the Ecuadorian people… To decide their future in the next elections”.

Reports say that this is the second time the opposition is trying to remove him from power since taking office in May of 2021.

Last year, the impeachment against him failed to get enough votes to reach the trial stage.

Charges against the president include embezzlement which Lasso said occurred before he came into office.
