Elite IDF reservists threaten to halt services beginning Sunday

HUNDREDS of elite reservists serving in Israel’s Defense Forces (IDF) said they would stop showing up for duty starting on Sunday.

Elite IDF reservists threatened to halt volunteer service in protest of the government’s plans to radically alter the judicial system.

The trend started earlier this month when 37 out of the 40 reservists in the Israeli Air Force’s 69th Squadron said they will refuse to show up for service or training to protest the coalition’s judicial overhaul plan and the recent rampage in the Palestinian town of Huwara.

The squadron — known as the Hammers -is the most prominent wave of reservists serving in the military.

Within two weeks, hundreds more elite reservists followed the trend, with the next boycott planned on Sunday.

Israel witnessed a series of mass protests since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the controversial legal overhaul in January.

At least 750 elite officers from the Air Force, special forces, and Israel’s intelligence agency threatened to stop volunteering for duty.
