AN estimated half a million Israelis joined the latest protests nationwide as they gathered in the streets for the 10th consecutive week.
Organizers said that the protesters who joined the latest rally account for 5% of Israel’s 9 million population.
Nearly half of the protesters, or 240,000, were in Tel Aviv.
The proposed legislation would give Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, the power to overrule Supreme Court decisions, nominate judges, and limit the Supreme Court’s power to exercise judicial review.
Critics have accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of pushing the legislation to get out of corruption trials he is currently facing which the latter denied.
Meanwhile, Israeli President Isaac Herzog demanded for the ‘disastrous’ legislation be abandoned immediately.
The current political chaos has plunged Israel into one of its worst domestic crises.
