Finland to close entire border with Russia after migrant surge

THE move comes as Helsinki accused Moscow of an “influence” operation in the European Union.

7 of 8 Finland-Russia road posts have already shut over a rise of migrant crossings this November.

And now, the Finnish government said that the last one, which is located in the Arctic Circle, will also close.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo announced the decision after an “extraordinary cabinet meeting,” citing new information indicating Russia’s involvement in sending migrants over the border. No evidence was provided to support the claim.

All border crossing points on the land border between the two countries will be closed until December 13.

The move comes as tensions rise, with Finland accusing Russia of destabilizing its national security, particularly after a significant increase in migrants attempting to cross the eastern border this month.

Reports say that around 900 asylum seekers entered Finland from Russia in November, and these individuals come from countries including Syria, Morocco, and Pakistan.

Finland, a historically neutral country, joined NATO in April in response to Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine, making it the newest member of the U.S.-led military alliance.

But this decision has strained relations, with Russia expressing deep regret over Finland’s NATO membership, stating it marks a departure from “longstanding, very kind relations based on mutual respect.”

All border crossing points on the land border between the two countries will be closed until December 13.
