LEADING politicians from Five Eyes countries which consist of the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand traveled to Wellington for talks.
The five-country ministerial talks discussed a range of international issues, where migration and security are top of the agenda. Before the meeting, topics expected to be part of the agenda include cyber security, foreign espionage at universities, migration, and labor mobility schemes between alliance countries, among others.
The war in Ukraine and China’s growing assertiveness were also part of the discussion.
Five Eyes were formed after World War II to share intelligence between American and British code-breakers.
The alliance which started between the United States and Britain in the aftermath of the Second World War has expanded to include Canada, Australia, and New Zealand over the next decade.
Five Eyes has a reputation for being extremely secretive and its member states have access to high-profile papers and information.
Earlier this year, the alliance blamed China for recent cyber-attacks targeting “critical infrastructure” in the United States but Beijing responded by accusing the group of spreading disinformation.
