Floating pier transporting aid from Cyprus to Gaza ready in few days

CYPRUS is making all necessary preparations to ensure the continuous flow of aid to Gaza in cooperation with the U.S., the European Union, and the United Arab Emirates.

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said the floating dock will be ready by Thursday based on the information they received from the U.S. government.

Cyprus hopes to be a hub for a “maritime corridor” that will ship relief goods from the Mediterranean nation to Gaza’s 2.4 million population. The construction of the US pier project will cost at least $320 million.

The initiative took place despite warnings from UN agencies and humanitarian aid groups that land deliveries are more efficient compared to sea missions and airdrops of aid.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Cyprus on Thursday after the bloc pledged to get involved in the aid project.

Aid shipments from Gaza to Cyprus resumed last week following a temporary pause caused by the accidental killing of seven World Central Kitchen aid workers in early April.
