SAUDI Arabia Foreign Minister (FM) Prince Faisal bin Farhan made a historic visit to Tehran for the first time since both countries ended their seven-year rift.

Prince Faisal’s planned visit was first announced earlier this week.

Before the trip, a local official revealed that the Saudi foreign minister will meet and hold talks with senior Iranian officials.

The visit comes after the two countries signed a landmark deal in March brokered by China to restore diplomatic ties.

Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran in 2016 after a group of protesters stormed the Saudi Embassy in Tehran to condemn the execution of a Shiite cleric by Saudi authorities.

Iran reopened its embassy in Riyadh earlier this month which was part of the China-brokered deal signed in March.

The reopening of Saudi Arabia’s Embassy in Tehran was expected to be high on the agenda.
