Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra delays return to Thailand

FORMER Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will no longer return to the country as scheduled amid post-election gridlock at home that could see the political party built by his family leading a coalition government.

Shinawatra who was scheduled to return on August 10 cited medical reasons for postponing his return to Thailand stating that he would now require a “physical examination first.”

However, the delay is expected not to last for “no more than two weeks.”

He faces a total of 12 years in prison, in three outstanding cases, if he returns to Thailand.

Police officers vowed to greet the 74-year-old billionaire with arrest warrants if he returns to the country.

His daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra is a candidate to become prime minister for the Pheu Thai party which won second place in the recent general elections.

But Paetongtarn decided to step back from her candidacy and make way for property tycoon Srettha Thavisin to be nominated as prime minister.

The former prime minister who has been in self-imposed exile for 15 years is currently monitoring events back home.
