THE torrential rains that hit Guangdong Province on the 19th of April resulted in farmers suffering from huge losses and forced thousands to flee from their homes.

Once dubbed the “factory floor of the world”, the Chinese province of Guangdong is prone to summer floods.

China’s state media reported that about 110,000 people had been evacuated across the province on Monday while 25,800 people were in emergency shelters.

The provincial capital of Guangzhou recorded a cumulative rainfall of 60.9cm in April, the highest monthly rainfall witnessed since 1959.

Highest-level red rainstorm warning was issued for parts of Guangdong including the megacity of Shenzhen.

The Chinese province is an economic powerhouse that is home to 127 million people.

Rescuers rushed to evacuate residents as days of heavy rains put millions of lives at risk.
