Home Affairs Ministry to table paper on transferring children from Immigration Depots

THE Malaysia Government is finalizing plans on transferring children from Immigration Detention Depots.

This is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs ( KDN) efforts to care for the welfare of children in prisons.

Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has announced that they are now in the final stage of collecting data on children currently in Detention Depots in Malaysia.

According to the KDN, children will be released soon from Immigration Detention Depots with the effort of the government here in the country.

He said that the data collection of the age, number, and presence of children in the Immigration Detention Depots is in the final stage.

He added that in completing the relevant papers, the KDN made some deals with stakeholders and some experts – Founder of Mercy Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, and former Home Affairs Minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar.

 “There are as many as 1,030 children at 20 Immigration Detention Depots involving 579 boys and 451 girls.”

“Out of the total concerned, 351 reside in Detention Depots with guardians while 679 others are without guardians,” said Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Home Affairs Minister.

Datuk Saifuddin also said that there are more than 1,000 children currently at 20 Immigration Detention Depots Including 579 boys and 451 girls. More than 600 of them have no guardians.

This is part of KDN’s efforts to protect the welfare of children in immigration detention depots by ensuring that they can get access to health and receive proper treatment in case of illness on top of providing access to education.
