IAEA head to visit Japan to hand over assessment of treated wastewater release

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi will have a 4-day visit to Japan to present his findings for its safety review of Japan’s plan to release treated radioactive water as well as other agendas regarding the issue.

Grossi will also inaugurate an IAEA office at the site of the Fukushima Dai Ichi Power Plant.

On Tuesday, the director general is scheduled to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to hand over the assessment.

According to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. (TEPCO), IAEA officials will be stationed at the new field office once the release begins to conduct safety reviews.

The wastewater has been treated with Alps or an advanced liquid processing system which removes a variety of radionuclides except for tritium.

Both the government and TEPCO aim to begin dumping the water in the summer however, the Japanese government still wants to thoroughly review the assessment before making decisions.

With the possible risk to the environment, food, and human health Kishida instructed relevant ministries to deliver an answer to local and international concerns.

Neighboring countries such as China, Russia, and Korea have expressed their opposition to the discharge plan, calling it a unilateral decision.

Japanese protesters and experts have also voiced their opposition to the said plan.

The IAEA stated that they will continue their efforts to listen to the opinions and requests of people that will be affected by the said dumping of treated radioactive wastewater.
