Influx of tourists to Puerto Galera continues despite oil spill threat

THE influx of local and foreign tourists to Puerto Galera continues now that the summer season has begun despite the oil spill threat.

The municipal government clarified that visitors to Puerto Galera have nothing to worry about because the town remains negative about the oil spill.

‘Research is the key’ for these friends who are eager to swim on the white beaches of Puerto Galera this summer season.

This comes amid reports that the town is said to be affected by the oil spill from the sunken MT Princess Empress in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.

Recently, there have been a lot of tourist cancellations in Puerto Galera.

The local government blamed the oil spill trajectory of the University Of The Philippines marine science institute for why some tourists did not visit the town.

“Residents, even tourists, will be scared when they only show the graphs. We have a lot of cancellations because of the projection they are making,” said Mayor Rocky Ilagan, Puerto Galera.

“They should be responsible and think about the livelihood of the residents,” he added.

But on Friday, local and foreign tourists continue to arrive in Puerto Galera.

This is after the municipal government confirmed that the town remains oil spill-free and visitors have nothing to fear.

According to the Department of Tourism, confirmed bookings have increased from Friday until Holy Week.

And the Philippine Ports Authority said it is ready for the resurgence of tourists this summer season.

Once again, the DOT assured that they are ready to support those affected by the oil spill by developing land-based tourist sites and training the affected tourism workers.
