PROTESTERS opposing the government’s judicial overhaul declared a nationwide “Week of Protests” set to begin on Sunday.
The proposed reforms in Israel’s legal system have rattled critics who argued would weaken the country’s judiciary system and threaten its democracy.
The International Bar Association on the other hand claimed it would seriously undermine the independence of the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, as well as dismantle legal checks on executive power.
In line with the declaration of ‘National Paralysis Week’, organizers are planning to schedule different events nearly every day of the week.
These include demonstrations on Sunday and Monday near the Knesset, nationwide mass protests on Tuesday; enforce significant blockades on Wednesday, while details of the protest events on Thursday are yet to be released.
On Friday morning, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveled to London to meet his British counterpart Rishi Sunak where he was greeted with more protests as hundreds rallied outside Downing Street.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s son year shared an article from the far-right website Breitbart alleging that the United States is the mastermind behind the protests to overthrow his father and pressure him to reach an agreement with the Iranians.
The demonstrations have escalated in a matter of weeks as the government expedites the process to adopt the controversial judicial overhaul package before the end of the current Knesset session on April 2.
