JAPANESE Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa announced the government’s commitment to support Ukraine despite the intensifying conflict in the Middle East as well as to continue sanctions against Russia.
Minister Kamikawa made the statement ahead of the virtual meeting between the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) nations with Kyiv held earlier this week.
The wealthy nations comprising the G7- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States- met in Tokyo from November 7 to 8 to discuss issues including Russia’s war in Ukraine and the Israel-Gaza crisis.
An increased security presence in parts of Tokyo was implemented during the event.
The Japanese foreign minister announced $65-M in humanitarian aid for Gaza during her diplomatic visit to the Middle East last week.
The aid was on top of the $10-M in emergency funding previously announced by the government.
The Japanese foreign minister urged her G7 counterparts to push for humanitarian pauses in the Israel-Hamas war to allow for aid into the Gaza Strip during their recent meeting in Tokyo.
