Korean steel manufacturing company donates ‘sea forest’ Ocean Arbor Day

ON Tuesday, Posco Group said it completed its transfer of the ownership of the ‘sea forest’ to Ulleungdo County.

The ‘sea forest’ is an artificial reef constructed underwater on the coast of Ulleungdo, an island located east of Mainland Korea.

3 years ago, Posco Group built the sea forest to restore and revive the marine ecosystem and the fishery industry at Ulleung County.

The forest covers 0.4 hectares installing 100 “triton” artificial reefs made with the company’s eco-friendly steel slag and 750 triton blocks.

In the spirit of the Ocean Arbor Day that is celebrated every 10th of May.

And seeing improvement in its regular monitoring that resulted in the increased presence of juvenile fishes and abundance of algae, the steel company decided to relegate the authority to supervise the sea forest to Ulleung County.

In addition, during the relegation event, Gyeongsang Province Marine Resources Research Institute donated around 30,000 fat greenling fish as an appreciation of Posco’s concern for the decrease of fishery resources.

Posco also plans to contribute more to the restoration of the marine ecosystem as well as to boost fisher income by continuing to manage the sea forest in addition to developing eco-friendly sea fertilizers.
