KADALASAN sa mga airport, isinasailalim ang mga personnel nito sa accident emergency drill upang ihanda ang mga ito sakaling magkaroon ng plane crash.
Ngunit ang mga personnel ng Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon, ay sumabak sa earthquake drill na ginanap sa Terminal 2 ng airport.
Napili ng Office of Civil Defense Region 7 ang MCIA, bilang first location nito sa isinagawang Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) nitong Lunes.
“Yong airport MCIA lagi pala silang nagkakaroon ng ganitong drill for plane crash. Pero this is the first time they did it for earthquake.”
“We are very thankful to MCIA for allowing this to happen in their facilities” saad ni Director Joel Erestain, Office of Civil Defense 7.
Ayon sa pamunuan ng MCIA, mahalagang maturuan ang mga personnel ng airport kung paano maging laging handa sa mga posibleng sakuna lalong-lalo na kung may sunog o sa panahon ng lindol.
“Of course this activity is very important, you know why because we are trying to address our operational readiness when it comes to emergency and we know for a fact that force major or acts of nature cannot be prevented. What we can do only on this is to minimize the possible damage or the possible effect of this kind of emergency,” ayon kay Armando Radoc, Admin Manager, MCIA.
Sa ngayon, ipinoposisyon na ang Cebu na maging sentro ng bagsakan ng tulong mula sa ibang mga bansa.
At maging sentro din ng pagresponde sa panahon ng kalamidad saan mang lugar sa bansa.
“We are also prepositioning Cebu to be the central. Cebu is not just a central of Visayas. Belt tayo. Gitna tayo ng buong Pilipinas so we can help Luzon, we can also help Mindanao,” dagdag pa ni Erestain.
Kabilang din sa mga dumalo ang Office of the Civil Defense Region 7, Bureau of Fire, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council – Lapu Lapu City, service providers sa airport at mga evaluator.
