More than 20 dead after massive fire engulfs battery plant in South Korea

IN South Korea, a powerful explosion of battery cells set a factory on fire, killing more than twenty people and injuring eight others.

Search and rescue operations for the missing continue after a huge fire-razed through a factory run by battery manufacturer Aricell in Hwaseong, about 90 minutes away from capital Seoul.

One of the workers trapped inside the warehouse died from cardiac arrest.

A massive fire started after lithium batteries exploded inside the warehouse that stored about 35,000 units.

Authorities believe the flames spread so quickly that there was not enough time for workers to escape, especially since battery materials such as nickel are easily flammable.

They added that the workers likely died from inhaling extremely toxic gas as the blaze got out of control.

Rescuers find it hard to identify the dead due to the intensity of burns the bodies have sustained.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the site with other officials.

The cause of the deadly explosion is still being investigated.
