Pakistan parliament elects Shehbaz Sharif as prime minister for second term

MIAN Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was reelected as a prime minister again. This marks his second term during the first session of the sixteenth National Assembly of Pakistan in Islamabad.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq announced the vote results as well as the members of Parliament welcoming the newly elected Prime Minister.

Sharif gained 201 votes against 93 votes for Omar Ayub Khan who was supported by the Sunni Itehad Council belonging to the oppositional P.T.I. party led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Sharif is Pakistan’s prime minister for a second term after a controversial election held last month— which was marred by accusations of rigging and delayed results.

The country voted on February 8, at a time when Imran Khan’s former ruling party, got banned before elections, won 90 seats placing independent candidates, and later joined the Sunni Itehad Council.
