THE Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces seized control of the second-largest city from the army in Sudan after three days of intense fighting.
The paramilitaries fighting the army in Sudan declared the capture of the 16th Infantry Division’s headquarters in Nyala, South Darfur State.
Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have consistently deployed a large number of troops in Sudan’s second-largest city since the beginning of October by mobilizing thousands of tribal fighters from Central, West, and East Darfur to support them in overthrowing the army leadership in South Darfur.
Fighting in Sudan between the two rival factions has been going on for more than six months now. The civil war has killed more than 9,000 people and displaced some 5.6 million since April.
The seizure of Nyala coincided with the resumption of peace talks between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Thursday.
