PBBM honors Siargao’s resiliency, strength as it opens ‘1st Dapa Siargao International Dragon Boat Festival’

PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. honored on Saturday the resiliency and strength of the residents and the local government officials of Siargao as its tourism industry bounces back to vibrancy with the hosting of the 1st Dapa Siargao International Dragon Boat Festival.

In a speech delivered by his son, William Vincent Marcos, the President stated that Siargao continues to maintain its lively tourism industry despite all the negative effects brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and Super Typhoon Odette to the region.

“It has been more than two years since the world was thrust into the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic and more than a year since Super Typhoon Odette wreaked havoc on our beloved Siargao,” President Marcos said in a speech read by his son.

“But through the crucible of adversity, our Siargaonon brothers and sisters were able to muster their innate resilience and strength, leading us to this very moment.  It follows the resounding success of the 1st Dapa Siargao National Dragon Boat Regatta held last year,” the President added.

Last year’s national dragon boat event brought together 21 boat teams nationwide while 28 teams from different parts of the world gathered on Saturday to participate in the 1st Dapa Siargao International Dragon Boat Festival.

President Marcos extended his warmest welcome and deepest gratitude to the international guests for gracing and participating in the event as he emphasized their presence is a testament to the unifying power of sports and the shared joy that binds all races as humanity.

The President called on the guests to recognize the local government unit of Dapa, the organizers and all the stakeholders for organizing the festival, showcasing the natural wonders of Siargao and revolutionizing its tourism industry with vision and innovation.

The chief executive also reminded the guests that they are the highlight of the festival as he urged them to “embrace it wholeheartedly for in every row you make and every wave you break lies the chance to bring triumph for yourselves and your respective communities.”

“Through your participation in this friendly competition, you will show us the boundless capacity of human strength, endurance, and spirit,” President Marcos said.

“For it is through your every effort that we let our humanity shine, transcend, and resonate across the seas. So, as we move forward in this event, let us remember these lessons well, especially as we go on to explore the sights of Siargao, meet new friends, and make indelible memories that would leave an enduring imprint on our souls for the rest of our lifetimes,” he added.
