Putin hails Belarus’ new nuclear power status

BELARUS has become a nuclear power with the successful operation of its first nuclear power station, built by Russia’s state atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, as said by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Located near Ostrovets, Belarus. The plant, constructed between 2013 and 2023, is the first outside of Russia to utilize Rosatom’s advanced nuclear reactors.

To recall, last year, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced that the construction of the nuclear facility was complete.

The plant’s second power unit, approved for commercial operation this November, has a capacity of 2,400 megawatts, covering up to 40% of Belarus’ energy needs.

Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed this achievement, stating that the power plant’s construction has led to the establishment of a new industry in Belarus, solidifying its nuclear power status.

“In this sense, Belarus has certainly become a nuclear power,” Pres. Vladimir Putin Russian federation.

In 2023, Russia stationed nuclear weapons in Belarus, responding to Minsk’s concerns about perceived threats and the presence of US nuclear weaponry in Europe.

Putin affirmed Russia’s commitment to defending Belarus and hinted at the withdrawal of tactical nuclear weapons if the US and NATO alter their political course, removing nuclear arsenals from Europe and dismantling related infrastructure.
