VLADIMIR Putin’s has kicked off his fifth term as President of Russia in a straightforward ceremony held in Moscow, marked by the absence of Western leaders who chose to boycott the event.
The ceremony was held at the Grand Kremlin Palace, where he walked the red carpet and while receiving applause of hundreds of guests, consisting of parliamentarians, Cabinet members, and even celebrities, including American actor Steven Seagal.
Adhering to tradition, Putin took the oath of office, pledging to serve the nation and its people, with one hand placed on a special copy of the constitution updated to include recent amendments.
Lawmakers from Russia’s parliament and justices from the Constitutional Court attended the ceremony, where Chief Justice Valery Zorkin formally confirmed Putin’s fifth presidency, set to last six years.
The 71-year-old statesman’s rule was extended in an uncontested election in March.
