Rival factions in Sudan resume peace talks in Saudi Arabia

REPRESENTATIVES of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces returned to the negotiating table in the Saudi capital of Jeddah.

More than 9,000 people died and some 5.6 million were displaced since the war between the two rival factions erupted on April 15.

The talks held earlier this week focused on achieving a ceasefire agreement although a lasting political solution to end the conflict is still unlikely.

The new round of talks also centered on unhindered humanitarian access and called on negotiators to abide by an earlier agreement to protect civilians.

The United States and Saudi Arabia have brokered the mediation efforts several times, but only achieved a limited effect, resulting in the ceasefire agreements being violated by the two rival factions.
