Russia, China vote against U.S. resolution on Gaza ceasefire, hostage deal

THE U.N. Security Council has failed to pass a U.S.-sponsored resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Among the conditions of the ceasefire deal proposed by the U.S. was to implement an immediate ceasefire that would only last for a few weeks to allow entry of humanitarian aid and to release remaining hostages in Gaza.

A Chinese envoy said the conditions set by the United States were unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Russia’s envoy to the United Nations pointed out that the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire was not good enough to save the lives of civilians in Palestine.

Eleven of the 15 council members voted in favor of the resolution but vetoes from Russia and China prevented its passage.

The council will meet again on Monday to vote on an alternative resolution drafted by elected members of the Security Council.

The United States received severely criticized by European and Arab countries for its refusal to call for a ceasefire in Gaza at an earlier date as well as its hesitation to condemn Israel.
