AS Singapore braces itself for the annual haze season, which may result from regional forest fires, industrial emissions, or adverse weather conditions, the MOH is taking pre-emptive action to address any potential shortage of N95 masks.
El Niño conditions are expected to develop in the Pacific Ocean in around one to two months, and countries including Singapore may face the most severe haze due to El Niño which will bring hotter and drier weather to the country.
This is why the Singaporean Ministry of Health (SMO) plans to release a huge stockpile of N95 masks to pharmacies to ensure a seamless distribution process and equitable access if the haze causes a shortage of it.
Singaporean authorities and health agencies will work closely with the MOH to coordinate the supply chain and ensure that masks reach those in need across different regions in the country.
The MOH also emphasized the importance of preparedness and its commitment to safeguarding public health, advising the Singaporean public to stay informed about air quality indices and heed any haze-related advisories issued by relevant authorities. It also encourages individuals to take precautionary measures such as minimizing outdoor activities, keeping windows closed, and using air purifiers when necessary.
In addition to the release of N95 masks, the MOH will intensify public awareness campaigns about the health risks associated with haze and guide on mitigating those risks by promoting education and disseminating accurate information.
Singapore’s Health Ministry also plans to work with the People’s Association to distribute N95 masks to low-income and vulnerable residents in case of a severe haze.
