South Korean police raids U.S. military bases over drug smuggling

17 soldiers and five other individuals are currently being investigated by South Korean police for allegedly smuggling or using synthetic marijuana through the military postal service.

The probe follows raids conducted by South Korean authorities in at least two U.S. Army bases in May, and this includes Camp Humphreys, its largest base overseas.

Reports say a Filipino and a South Korean have also been arrested, while prosecutors review the cases against 22 suspects.

South Korean authorities launched the probe following a tip from the enforcement arm of the U.S. Army.

The joint raids conducted by South Korean police and the U.S. Army’s criminal investigation found 77 grams of synthetic cannabis, more than 4 kilograms of mixed liquids used for vaping, and cash totaling 12,850 U.S. dollars, at the homes of the 22 suspects.

All of them are accused of smuggling synthetic marijuana, also known as K2 and spice, into South Korea, using the postal service of the U.S. military.

The United States Forces Korea said it was aware of the probe, but also stated that no soldiers are currently in confinement or being detained in relation to the matter.
