REFUGEE reception and accommodation centers in Cyprus are getting crowded with asylum seekers from Syria and African countries.
Around 25,000 asylum seekers are hoping they will be granted international protection.
The Mediterranean island last week suspended processing of asylum applications from Syria following a sharp increase in arrivals this month.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said the suspension of applications was an emergency measure to protect the interests of Cyprus.
More than 1,000 people from Leva arrived in Cyprus by boats amid deepening tensions in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, the latest government data showed more than 2,000 refugees entered Cyprus by sea in the first three months of 2024.
The government asked help from the European Union to help put under control the recent surge of Syrian refugees fleeing to Cyprus through Lebanon.
