U.N. envoy to return to Cyprus for reunification talks

UN envoy Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar is scheduled to visit Cyprus in early May to renew peace talks between Turkish and Greek Cypriots.

Holguin will meet Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides to discuss the next steps in reunification talks.

The U.N. envoy visited Cyprus in early January where she discussed plans with the Cypriot leader on plans to REVIVE PEACE TALKS BETWEEN TURKISH CYPRIOTS AND CITIZENS OF THE CYPRUS REPUBLIC after a six-year deadlock.

Cyprus became ethnically divided in 1974 when Turkiye invaded in response to a military coup supported by Greece.

Only Turkiye recognizes the declaration of independence by the Turkish Cypriots in 1983 that paved the way for separate political identification with the Greek Cypriots.

The peace talks aim to find common ground between the breakaway north and the internationally recognized south.
