Syria invites Iran’s president for high-level talks

IRANIAN President Ebrahim Raisi accepted Syria’s invitation for high-level talks in Damascus.

Raisi will travel to Damascus for a “very important” two-day visit starting on Wednesday.

This will be the first time an Iranian president will visit Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011. Syria is considered Iran’s closest strategic ally.

Both sides have been joining forces for almost four decades. Iran has supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by providing financial and military support to his regime during the 12-year-old conflict in Syria.

The depth of their political alliance comes from a shared perception of threat, a convergence of interests in Lebanon and Iraq, and a common perspective regarding Palestine, Israel, and the United States.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also hailed the relationship between Tehran and Damascus as “vital for both countries.”
