Syria’s return to Arab League brings hope to end crisis

AS Syria officially sealed its return to the Arab fold, residents in Damascus are hoping it will pave the way for peace to be restored and end years of suffering brought on by the civil war.

Earlier this month, Arab League members voted to reinstate Syria’s membership in the 22-member organization.

Syria’s return to the Arab fold gave hope to some residents that this could be the beginning of restoring peace in the war-torn country.

One particular resident accused the United States of opposing the normalization of relations between Syria and other Arab countries because it wants the conflict to persist in the region so it can continue to raid the war-torn country’s oil and gas resources.

He hoped that the summit will be the key to solving the problems of his country haunted by sanctions, which have led to inflation and energy shortages nationwide.

Meanwhile, another resident expressed hope that Syria’s return to the Arab League will pave the way for the improvement of the economy and the reopening of border crossings to help boost the economy and promote more cooperation among Arab countries.

Even though the majority of the Arab League member states welcomed Syria’s return, Qatar maintained it has no plans to normalize ties with the Assad regime, with the Qatari emir making headlines recently for walking out of the Arab summit ahead of the Syrian president’s speech.
