Terrorist designation for Houthis to take effect on February 16

THE U.S. Ambassador to Yemen previously said the move to re-designate Houthi as a foreign terrorist organization can still be reversed once the resistance group stopped attacking commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

On the 17th of January, the U.S. Department of State announced its decision to designate Ansarallah, commonly known as the Houthis, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist Group.

The decision takes effect on February 16 or 30 days from the time of the announcement.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the decision to re-designate the Houthis was in response to the unprecedented attacks against the American forces and international maritime vessels.

It was the Former U.S. President Donald Trump who ordered the classification of Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization during his term.

However, U.S. President Joe Biden removed the resistance group from the list shortly after winning the presidential elections in February 2021.

Increasing tensions in the Red Sea as a result of Washington’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza pushed the Department of State to re-designate Ansarallah as a global terrorist group nearly three years after it was removed from the list.

Hamas also condemned the decision and called it a political move and a biased decision to show support for Israel’s occupation.

Hamas added that U.S. policies will not stop the Arab people from supporting Palestinians.

The designation aims to block funding for the Houthis.
