Thai court accepts complaint seeking PM’s removal

THAI Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s political career faces a setback after dozens of senators filed a complaint concerning his appointment to the cabinet of a lawyer who served jail time.

Forty senators argued that the appointment of Prime Minister’s Office Minister Pichit Chuenban fell short of moral and ethical standards for ministers.

The office minister in question resigned on Tuesday amid pressure from senators seeking a Constitutional Court ruling on his eligibility to serve as a cabinet minister.

The complaint against Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was filed on Thursday, the 23rd of May.

The court refused to suspend Srettha from duty pending a verdict.

The latest decision comes after a major cabinet reshuffle led to the resignation of three ministers in recent weeks as the government struggles to deliver on a delayed election promise of cash handouts for 50 million people.

The prime minister will be given 15 days to appeal and justify his nomination.
