Tropical Storm Hilary: First in 84 years

A so-called “hurriquake” happened in California, United States, as Southern California experienced a 5.1 magnitude earthquake amid the onslaught of Tropical Storm, Hilary.

Hilary was initially a hurricane but it gradually weakened to a tropical storm still, Californians are bracing for the worst that has yet to come.

Hilary brought heavy rains, flash floods, and mudslides. Despite being downgraded from a Category 4 hurricane, Hilary’s lingering impact prompted evacuations, emergency declarations, and disruptions.

Although Hilary’s winds have become weaker, the danger it poses remains serious.

Tropical Storm Hilary is the first in 84 years in California’s history.

The National Hurricane Center warned about floods that could be life-threatening and cause significant damage due to continuous heavy rain and the increased risk of mudslides.

Forecasters anticipate 2 to 4 inches of additional rainfall across Southern California and Southern Nevada.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, while President Joe Biden activated FEMA to deploy aid to the region.

Meanwhile, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook the people of Southern California, with its epicenter located at the northwest of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said there were no initial reports of structural damage or injuries, and over 100 fire stations were checking buildings for possible damage.
