THE United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its deep concern for the exacerbation of the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn enclave as fighting between Israel and Hamas entered its fourth week.
The UAE issued the statement after Israel announced it is expanding its ground operations in Gaza on Friday as the military steps up its assault on the Hamas terrorist group.
Residents in Gaza endured a night of heavy bombardment as Israeli airstrikes launched the besieged enclave, with internet and phone communications also cut off.
Israel’s military escalation also killed several senior officials of Hamas.
The United Nations General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution calling for a humanitarian truce in Gaza and the end of hostilities. The resolution earned the support of 120 countries including the UAE.
The UAE also contributed $20 million in response to the humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave and launched a campaign called Compassion for Gaza which attracted thousands of volunteers from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah who helped pack up critical aid for the Palestinian people. The initiative aims to expand in all seven emirates across the UAE.
The UAE, which became the first country to normalize relations with Israel in 2020, also requested an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting in the wake of expanded ground operations in the war-torn territory.
