THE United Arab Emirates (UAE) submitted a letter to the United Nations Security Council to oppose reports of its alleged involvement in the ongoing civil war in Sudan.
In a letter sent by Mohamed Abushahab, UAE Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, the Emirati envoy slammed the allegations made by the Permanent Representative of Sudan as “baseless” and “an attempt to divert attention from the conflict.”
“The United Arab Emirates unequivocally rejects the baseless allegations made by the Permanent Representative of the Sudan, which run counter to the longstanding brotherly relations between our two countries, and regrettably appear to be nothing more than an attempt to divert attention from the conflict,” Mohamed Abushahab UAE’s Ambassador to the UN said.
Abushahab added that all allegations regarding the UAE’s involvement in any form of aggression or destabilization in Sudan, including the provision of any military, financial, or political support to any faction in the North African country are unfounded and lack any credible evidence.
The accusations were made by the Permanent Representative of Sudan during a meeting of the Security Council on April 19, 2024.
Fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces erupted on April 15, 2023, which killed more than 14,000 people and displaced 8 million others after one year of violent clashes.
A leaked UN report in January 2024 claimed evidence suggesting the UAE has provided weapons to the paramilitary group. The UAE denied the allegation, stating it has consistently called for de-escalation, a sustainable ceasefire, and diplomatic dialogue in Sudan.
