UAE, Saudi create alternative route amid Red Sea attacks

THE UAE and Saudi Arabia opened their territories to allow the shipment of goods via land routes amid rising tensions in the Red Sea.

Increasing attacks staged by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait since the start of the conflict in Gaza led to the creation of the Dubai-Haifa land corridor.

At least 12 percent of global trade accounting for one trillion dollars passes through the strategic waterway every year.

The attacks affected global maritime trade as shipping companies desperately searched for alternative routes.

The land corridor connects Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port to Israel’s Haifa port, via roads passing through Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

The land corridor started operations in December and information on the project was not immediately accessible to the public.
