US, South Korea sign nuclear weapons deal

WASHINGTON agrees to send nuclear-armed submarines to Seoul and plans to involve South Korea in its nuclear planning operations as the two sides develop a nuclear consultative group.

This would be Washington’s first time in 40 years to send nuclear-armed submarines but also included in the deal are nuclear-capable bombers.

As part of the deal, South Korea also agreed to not develop its own nuclear weapons.

According to US President Joe Biden, the Washington Declaration will strengthen alliance and cooperation to defend against an attack by North Korea.

To note, Pyongyang is developing tactical nuclear weapons that can target South Korea and it has long-range weapons that can reach the mainland United States. With this, fear continues to rise on both sides regarding North Korea’s nuclear threat.

Meanwhile, it can be remembered that China has repeatedly warned against the US. “deliberately stirring up tensions, provoking confrontation and playing up threats”.
