THAI authorities warned residents to start saving water and prepare for a potential drought in the coming months.
The El Niño phenomenon increased the risk of the looming drought crisis in Thailand.
The phenomenon which started in July of last year has resulted in less rainfall.
The Office of the National Water Resources asked the public to do its part by helping save water.
Authorities said they have already identified areas that will most likely bear the brunt of the upcoming drought and are preparing plans to save enough water that will last for the whole year.
Meanwhile, national parks are trying to help animals survive bushfires and droughts such as helping fill water into several ponds in nearby mountains to save animals from dehydration.
El Niño refers to a warming of the ocean surface, or above-average sea surface temperatures, which can strongly affect marine life and the weather worldwide.
Just like Japan and the Philippines, Thailand is also part of the so-called “Ring of Fire” making it vulnerable to many natural and human-induced hazards such as droughts, floods, storms, landslides, and forest fires.
