Huge fire engulfs mountains in northeast Thailand

FIREFIGHTERS struggled for hours to extinguish a huge blaze that sparked two hours away from Bangkok.

The wildfire engulfed a mountain and a forest in Khao Laem, Nakhon Nayok province on Tuesday before it spread to several mountains in Khao Laem, Khao Kaew, and Khao Tabak.

Firefighters were still struggling to stop the blaze as of Thursday morning.

Authorities believe strong winds and thunder strikes helped flame the blaze that burned 700 rai of land.

The military convened earlier today and discussed plans on how to prevent the fire from reaching communities.

The steep mountain terrain prevented firefighters from reaching the blaze as it spread quickly to nearby mountains.

No evacuation orders were made despite the fire reaching the nearest communities living 400 to 500 meters away.
