ARGENTINA’s newly-elected President, Javier Milei, made a critical decision to cancel the BRICS application stating that it is inappropriate for his country to be considered a full member of the bloc.
Javier Milei, who was elected president of Argentina on December 10, 2023, announced a shift in foreign policy by deciding not to pursue his country’s plan to join BRICS.
He informed the BRICS leaders which consist of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa through a letter sent on December 30, 2023.
Milei also announced Argentina’s plan to cut off diplomatic ties with Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.
The Argentinian president expressed the desire to have closer trade and bilateral ties with the United Nations and Israel during his election campaign.
The BRICS countries are often seen as a challenge to the global order led by the West and are supporters of a multi-polar world order.
Last year, more than 40 nations showed interest in joining BRICS.
Of this number, 23 had formally submitted their applications but only six were approved as members, including Argentina.
