UNITED States President Joe Biden plans to run for re-election in 2024 and his team is using social media influencers on platforms like TikTok to reach young voters despite concerns about data privacy.
US President Joe Biden has hinted at his intention to run for re-election in 2024.
In an interview during the 2023 White House Easter Egg Roll, he revealed that he plans to run, but his team has not yet made a formal announcement.
He has previously stated that he intends to be the democratic candidate in 2024 and will run alongside Vice President Kamala Harris.
While Biden’s team is preparing for his re-election campaign, the administration is reaching out to influencers on social media platforms such as TikTok to promote the president’s political message and gain popularity among young Americans.
This comes as the administration is also leading a war on TikTok, seeking a blanket ban on the app due to concerns that the platform could be used to collect data on American citizens and potentially accessed by the Chinese government.
Despite these concerns, the Biden administration is engaging with social media influencers to reach out to young voters.
The initiative is being led by Rob Flaherty, a White House employee overseeing 4 digital staff members.
Flaherty was recently given the title of Assistant to the President, which is equivalent to that of Press Secretary and Communication Director.
The White House is also planning to connect with influencers who have a local following when Biden visits a particular state.
The aim is to engage with young voters, mothers who use different platforms to get information, climate activists, and people whose main way of getting information is digital, said White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jen O’ Malley Dillon.
The strategy appears to be an attempt to counter former President Donald Trump, who has a large social media following on several platforms and has also thrown his hat in the ring for the next presidential elections in 2024.
With the race for the white house heating up, it remains to be seen how effective these efforts will be in securing a 2nd term for President Biden.
