Brazil races to save lives amid devastating flood’s rising death toll

SOUTHEASTERN Brazil was a picture of an “apocalyptic” vibe in the aftermath of devastating floods that killed more than 20 people in two states and forced thousands to evacuate their homes.

This past Friday alone, more than a month’s worth of rain poured in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro in 24 hours.

Meanwhile, torrential downpours of rain and thunderstorms caused severe flooding in the neighboring state of Rio Grande do Sul.

A girl who was buried under mud for 16 hours was one of those who miraculously survived.

Rescuers race against time to save flood victims stranded in the mountainous areas in southeastern Brazil as the death toll is expected to rise.

Vehicles floating in muddy waters became a typical scenario as the heavy vehicles seemed like paperweights under the mercy of the raging floods.

Dengue outbreak in Brazil claims over 700 lives, infects millions

As southeastern Brazil bears the brunt of the severe storm, dengue fever infections have been spreading rapidly in the South American nation.

According to the latest data, there have been more than 700 deaths recorded, while the number of infections has surpassed two million cases in the first three months of 2024.

The outbreak prompted local authorities to declare a state of emergency.
