Bushfire warnings as Australia swelters in extreme heatwave

THE El Niño weather pattern is causing residents in three Australian states to endure extreme heatwaves while authorities keep an eye on the possibility of life-threatening bushfires.

Residents in New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia received heat warnings as temperatures soared on Sunday.

Authorities issued extreme heatwave alerts for Western Australia and South Australia

Severe warnings were in place for Queensland, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory.

Western Australia’s Pilbara region anticipates severe-to-extreme heatwave conditions, with temperatures to reach as high as 50 degrees Celsius, according to forecaster data.

It can be remembered that the Pilbara town of Onslow witnessed its hottest temperature in the history of Australia, recorded at 50.7 degrees Celsius on January 13, 2023.

Meanwhile, the so-called Black Saturday bushfires in 2009 were one of the deadliest disasters in Australia’s history that killed 173 people, injured 500 others, and burned thousands of homes.

As parts of Australia swelter in an intense heatwave, authorities are also monitoring a brewing cyclone that threatens to form in the northern part of the country.
