Cambodia’s former PM reveals plot by extremist group to overthrow government

SENATE President Hun Sen, who served as the former Prime Minister of Cambodia for nearly forty years, revealed that the government is already aware of a secret plot to topple the government.

According to Hun Sen, an extremist group is in the process of trying to form an illegal “government-in-exile” (GiE) and warned that stern action will be taken to stop the them.

The Senate President said that any political party or organization in Cambodia that has ties to the extremist group must be dissolved to ensure that national interests are protected.

Hun Sen made the revelation during the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the Cambodian People’s Party or CPP.

The former prime minister also proposed amending the law on political parties to severely punish the extremists who join in the formation of overthrowing the elected government.

Hun Sen, the longest-serving leader of Asia, stepped down from power in August 2023 after 38 years of ruling Cambodia.

His son Hun Manet replaced him as the country’s Prime Minister.

The Senate President cited France as an example where protests have erupted amid fears the country could enter into a civil war if the far-right or far-left party wins the election.

In June of last year, Hun Sen accused an opposition group of plotting to kidnap him ahead of the national elections.
