“The thrust of the Duterte administration only they could have done it na mag-push. Maglagay ng third telco because as we know, the two other telcos were every entrenched, very powerful, and you really needed the political will kasi kung wala yon, yung government support, we would not have been able to establish the third telco. So, salamat po, you were Presidential legal counsel that time,” pahayag ni Atty. Adel Tamano, Chief Administrative Officer, DITO Telecom.
And that’s why it’s almost impossible to get a third telco and fourth telco because no one is going to spend P250-Billion tapos yung kita mo… 1 year ang kita namin P7.3 Billion di ba? Tapos ang gastos mo P250 Billion, it’s really tough. But again, we’re very confident na the market is there and once Filipinos try our service, actually sobrang mura naming and if you are in an area with good signal we’re actually very-very fast,” dagdag ni Tamano.
“When President Duterte and your office pushed this initiative no, at that time the Philippines was one of the most expensive in terms of telecommunication services and also the slowest. We were out of 182 countries pang-100 tayo. So that was in 2018. Fast forward to 2023, we are now actually one of the cheapest in the world in-terms of gigabytes. One of the cheapest in the world,” aniya.
“Ginawa nilang requirement for us when we got our franchise is may minimum speed kami requirement, minimum coverage, and also the amount of money that we have to spend no. So, what we could have done if it’s just a normal company siguro nasa NCR lang kami kasi dito yung pera eh. But because government committed us to have those population coverage etc. we really had to do it. There’s really a nation-building element in our DNA if I can see it that way,” pagtatapos ni Tamano.
