High alert as Israeli President visits Azerbaijan

SECURITY levels were heavier than usual amid fears that neighboring Iran will disrupt Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to Azerbaijan.

Herzog arrived in the Republic of Azerbaijan on Tuesday for an official visit, with a guard of honor lined up to meet him at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport.

Azeri Forces and Israel’s Security Agency shut down entire areas surrounding the capital city of Baku.

Thousands of soldiers and police officers were also deployed across the city.

The visiting delegation was prohibited from connecting their phones to cellular networks or from separating from the group.

Security was high as Iran’s border with Azerbaijan lies about 100 km from the capital.

Herzog will hold a diplomatic meeting with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, with discussions concerning Iran part of the agenda during his 2-day visit.

The visit comes as Azerbaijan recently marked its 105th Independence Day.
