A tragic incident that caused dozens getting killed and hospitalized after consuming cheap alcohol smuggled in India claimed more lives. The death toll has now reached 47 in the past three days.
In the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, reports of people getting killed from illegally made toxic alcohol is causing a stir locally and abroad.
The incident came to light on Tuesday night when several residents in Kallakuruchi district fell ill after consuming the liquor.
The affected ones suffered vomiting, stomach aches and excessive diarrhea.
More than 100 people were rushed in various hospitals and some didn’t make it out alive.
The death toll has reached 47 as of Friday while authorities warned the number could rise further.
The state government issued disciplinary action for at least 10 officials, including the district’s chief administrator and its police chief.
Police arrested four people and seized 200 liters of illegally brewed alcohol tainted with methanol – a toxic chemical compound found in fuels and household cleaners.
The smuggled tainted alcohol is common in India and is often sold at a cheaper rate compared to licensed brands.
