Lawyer linked to gang, ex-soccer star arrested in fraud crackdown in Brazil

A lawyer suspected of being a gang leader, was arrested during an operation in Alagoas, Brazil.

Frederico Simões and all suspects nabbed in the operation were accused of embezzlement, bid-rigging, forgery, misappropriation, and money laundering of public funds.

During one of the investigations, it was discovered that Simões also bought a luxurious car, a Porsche Carrera 911, for former Brazilian soccer player Daniel Alvez, who is also facing a sentence for rape. The car was bought and received by Simões but is registered in the soccer player’s name.

During the execution of the warrants, the Public Prosecutor’s Office seized R$ 649,000, telematics data, luxury cars including a Porsche, and confiscated a farm hotel in Sento Sé, Bahia.

The main targets of Operation Maligno are the lawyer and his wife, Hianne Maria da Costa Pinto, whose front cooperative offered public administration services.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office (PPO) froze R$46-M of the defendants’ assets, linked to money laundering.

The operation was supported by police forces from Alagoas and Pernambuco.
